I've no idea how ptools locates the centre line of the seam, Helmut
never released this part of the code.
I seem to remember that he wasn't satisfied with the technique and
considered it experimental - I suspect that this is the real reason
why he never released source.
The same with colour-correction, there is no reason why you should
have to indicate a reference image, the tool should be able to
figure out which two images require the maximum compensation and use
the average as a reference.

If the feather width gets greater than the overlap you get a nasty
transition where the background shows through.
