I started doing two things:
 - changing the sequence of the images:  Start with center one, then
   one left, then one right etc.  The algorithm somehow seems to
   process them sequentially.
 - I switch off the actual colour correction and use only
   brightness/contrast correction. 

But still you're right, there's quite some potential for improvements.
