When stitching two flat scans the area needs to be maximised in a
similar way, ideally all the control points would be spread out
evenly in a line along the length of the final seam.

This applies to many photographic situations too - Where most people
would prefer a clean seam to a mathematically accurate stitch.

This could be a neat hugin feature, it could sift control points by
calculating distances to the nearest seam and delete ones that are
furthest away.
