Nope, I have the same problem.  I intend to try recompiling vigra
with different options to see if that helps.  No time at the moment.

This isn't the plug-in, the tiff file initially appears as layers
with alpha channels.

At least with gimp2, I can remove the alpha channels and turn them
into full layer masks like so:

  Mask -> Add layer Mask -> Transfer Layer's Alpha Channel

The problem is the current gimp tif import actually multiplies the
RGB values by the alpha channel value - This destroys the data.
