Summary: automatic gain adjustment
Initial Comment:
when pictures are taken using auto exposure (as is the
default in most digital camera's) there are variances
between intensity of the different images composing the
panorama.
is there a possibility to compensate for this?
maybe using the EXIf info ?
(autostich has a means to do this, which is called
'automatic gain' but I have no idea how it's doing it's
thing)

Hugin allows you to select automatic brightness
compensation, though this only has an effect if you are
using PTStitcher or PTmender as the stitching engine.
nona, the internal hugin stitcher doesn't support doing this
automatically, though recent CVS versions of hugin allow you
to set intensity values manually per image.
Consider also using enblend with TIFF output, this gives
excellent results when stitching photos taken on 'auto'.
