[ptx] hugin compile freezing on Stitcher1.cpp

im trying to build hugin on Ubuntu Dapper Drake from cvs. when
make-ing, gcc tachs out when it gets to

 gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../src/include -I../../src/include
-I../../src/foreign -pthread -I/usr/include -I/usr/local/include
-DHasPANO -g -O2 -MT Stitcher1.lo -MD -MP -MF .deps/Stitcher1.Tpo -c
Stitcher1.cpp -o Stitcher1.o

ive tried gcc-4.0, gcc-3.3, g++-4.0, g++-3.4 and panotools 2.7.0,
2.8.3, latest cvs. ive also tried following the instructions here:

ive built 0.5 before so im clueless as to what the problem is. any ideas?
