I think this is similar to this debian bug #297858:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=297858

But running checkinstall as root didn't solve the
problem, I think this is because of the "virtual"
installation with checkinstall, to build the debian
package.

Is there a configure switch to avoid using
/usr/bin/update-desktop-database after the installation?
