Summary: 16 bit per channel support
Initial Comment:
Currently input images are restricted to JPEG (= 8 bit
per channel). With the growing importance of RAW modes
on cameras, it would be a big improvement to have
support for 16 bit images. File format should be 16 bit
per channel TIFFs in this case, both for input and
output images.

They are already supported!
hugin already supports almost all TIFF files: 8, 16, 32 bit
integer as well as float and double images.
Just try loading a 16 bit TIFF file. (You might have to
selecte *.tif in the file dialog, before .tif files appear).
