P.S. Not to forget the Second View and Third View project by Mark Klett 
and others - several photographers were commissioned by the US 
government in the 19th century to make a photographic survey of the 
American West, building up a large archive of images.
In the Seventies several of the new topographic photographers started a 
rephotographic survey, tracking down the exact location, view, field of 
view and time of year of each image and reshooting it as exactly as 
possible. They then did the same in the late Nineties.
