The opposite is the reality for many/most of the later-generation
high-MPix cameras:
Among the 5 8 Mpix cameras dpreview tested this spring (all using the
same Sony ccd chip), two of them (Minolta and Nikon) used the same
optics as in their 5 MPix predecessors, and in both cases this meant
that they could not resolve all that the chip was capable of in the
other (Sony, Canon & Olympus) cameras with custom lenses.
