Do they still fail with my latest changes (new Makefile.am and
ax_check_java.m4)?

does it still need the CFLAGS with the attached patch applied? (Quick
Hack)
Also where does filter.r fit in?

Not a problem, could be AC_PREREQ(2.5) as well to catch all working
versions.
