some questions about Linux

Hi,
  o in common, there are wxGTK-2.4.2.tar.gz and wxGTK-2.4.2.rpm for downloading.
    What is the difference between them or what is rmp? I downloaded the .tar.gz
    version, and had to compile and install it, how about .rpm version?
  o what is the difference between wxGTK and wxGTK-devel version? Can I install
    them both?
  I have ordered a handbook on Linux for more learning, thanks for the help.
  By the way, maybe it is time to add hugin own application icon and a beautiful
splash window (wxSplashScreen) now.
