Thank you for your email to Philip Clarke, our Chief Executive, regarding our participation in a government-led work experience programme. 
At Tesco we take our responsibility as Britain's biggest private sector employer seriously.  We are committed to playing our part to help tackle unemployment in these challenging times and are creating 7,000 new jobs this year, despite the difficult economic climate. At a time of record youth unemployment we are particularly committed to providing opportunities for young people.  First and foremost this means providing jobs for young people and we employ over 70,000 people under the age of 25, which is a quarter of our workforce.
In addition, and in response to your question, we are participating in a  government-led work experience scheme to help give young people valuable experience of the workplace.  The young people taking part in this programme are not a replacement or substitute for our permanent staff and I am pleased to say that over 300 of them so far, have gone on to get permanent employment with us. However, I appreciate your concerns and can advise that Tesco have suggested to the Department of Work and Pensions that, to avoid any misunderstanding about the voluntary nature of the scheme, the risk of losing benefits that currently exists should be removed. 
As an alternative to this, we are pleased to announce that moving forward, any young person accepted for work experience with Tesco, will also have the option of a 4 week paid placement.  We do recognise it will be difficult for young people to give up benefits for a short-term placement. Therefore, providing the placement is completed satisfactorily , they will be guaranteed a permanent job at the end of it.  We hope that this will be a major boost for young people looking to enter the workplace on a permanent basis. 
Tesco committed 3000 work placements under the Government’s work experience scheme. To date around 1500 have been delivered. Please be assured we will offer the choice of paid work and the jobs guarantee to all of the remaining placements we will deliver under the scheme.

Dear Phillip, 


I understand this time of cutbacks is hard for all of us and the need for 
austerity is apparent. Although Tesco stores recorded 'record profits of £3.8bn 
(more that £10m a day)' 
(http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/apr/19/tesco-reports-record-profits), 
it's obviously important to save the pennies in this time of financial 
crisis. 

I therefore am writing to congratulate you on your fantastic initiative to 
stop paying workers at all. Of course Britain is a nation built on slave labour. 
What sort of country would we be without our trading empire? We certainly don't 
make enough money from farming (definitely not now Tesco controls the market) to 
thrive without a little exploitation. 

So, well done for taking it to new levels. I'm sure you will have potential 
new workers queuing up to fill these job positions and be given the 'unique' 
opportunity to join the Tesco family.
